Believe it or not, Daft Punk did sample Mr. Manilow for “Superheroes.” But wait, it doesn’t stop there!

Palms Out Sounds compiled thirteen tracks from which Daft Punk sampled from, including songs from Sister Sledge and Electric Light Orchestra. The ten others are artists I’ve never heard of, but assuming they are of late 70s/early 80s disco/funk/R&B “fame.” Like the Commodores meets Earth, Wind and Fire, meets…errr…Barry Manilow?

Eh, nevermind. Check out the songs and decide for yourself if Daft Punk continue to reign supreme in electronica, or if they’re pulling a Vanilla Ice.

They do reign supreme. They and Vanilla Ice, P-Diddy, and scores of other hip-hop artits of the last decade all sample previous works. The distinction is weather or not you call it a cover or just a sample. I don’t like Vanilla Ice as much as the next person, but his sample of David Bowie’s “Under Pressure” (he did change the beat slightly) is far less then Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock” which could be easily called a cover of Breakwater’s “Release the Beast”. What sets Daft Punk apart is they take a sample and make it part of their own unique and creative work.
